Huang Qi was born in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, P.R. China, 1976. He received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Fuzhou University in 1996, MS degree from Tsinghua University in 1999, and Ph.D degree from Arizona State University in 2003. After graduation, he joined University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), where he worked in School of Energy Science and Engineering (SESE), from 2003 to 2020. He was the Vice President of Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) from 2020 to 2022, and the President of Southwest University of Science and Technology (SWUST) from 2022 to 2024. Now he works as the President of Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED).
He has PI-ed more than 20 national and provincial projects including projects under the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation. He was awarded 1 China Patent Excellence Award, 1 First Prize of the Chinese Instrument Society, 1 First Prize/Second Prize of Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 Second Prize of Excellent Scientific and Technological Achievements of the Ministry of Education. He has authored/coauthored more than 300 technical papers, 5 books, including 2 published by Wiley-IEEE Press. He has applied for more than 100 patents, with more than 80 approved by China and 2 approved by United States. He was selected into the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, the Leader of Disciplines in Science and Technology of Sichuan Province, PI of the Sichuan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Team, and the Sichuan Tianfu Qingcheng Innovation Leading Talent Program. Currently his main research areas include next generation power energy systems with high-penetration renewable energy and power electronic devices, science and technology innovation strategies and development plans, etc.
He was a member of the expert group of the 13th Five-Year Energy Science and Technology Innovation Planning of the Ministry of Science and Technology, China. He was the leading expert in the expert group of the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Energy and Chemical Industry of Sichuan Province, the expert group of the 13th Five-Year Plan of the New Energy Field of Sichuan Province, and the "Clean Energy" expert group in the "5+1" modern industrial system of Sichuan Province. He chaired/co-chaired many high-impact international conferences, including 2019 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technology and 2022 IEEE EI2.
